Five Good Reasons to Live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina

From the desk of John Weber | The John Weber Team

Hey everyone,

I talk to people every week who are thinking about making a move south — and a lot of them ask me the same question: “John, why the Lowcountry?”

Great question. And honestly? I could give you 50 reasons. But let’s keep it simple. Here are the five that come up again and again — the ones that, once people experience them, make them wonder why they waited so long.

1. The Weather Is Just Better

Let’s start with the obvious. The Lowcountry has over 250 days of sunshine a year. Winters are mild — we’re talking highs in the 60s most days from December through February. You’re not scraping ice off your windshield. You’re not shoveling your driveway at 7am. You’re playing golf, walking the beach, or sitting on your back porch with a cup of coffee.

If you’re tired of brutal winters, the Lowcountry is the answer. Plain and simple.

2. The Cost of Living Makes Your Retirement Dollar Go Further

South Carolina is consistently ranked as one of the most tax-friendly states for retirees in the entire country. Social Security income is not taxed. There are significant deductions on other retirement income. Property taxes are lower than most states — especially if you claim a primary residence exemption.

That means the money you worked your whole life to save? It goes further here. A lot further.

3. World-Class Lifestyle — Without the World-Class Price Tag

Hilton Head Island and Bluffton aren’t just beautiful — they’re livable. You’ve got championship golf courses, miles of biking trails, stunning beaches, award-winning restaurants, live music, boating, fishing, and a community of people who actually enjoy where they live.

The lifestyle here rivals places like Naples or Palm Beach — but you’re not paying Naples or Palm Beach prices. It’s one of the best-kept secrets in retirement living, and people are starting to figure that out.

4. A Strong, Welcoming Community

One of the things I hear most from people who’ve made the move? They found their people here.

The Lowcountry has a huge population of retirees and pre-retirees from all over the country — professionals, entrepreneurs, military families, you name it. People are active, engaged, and genuinely friendly. Whether it’s a golf league, a church, a fitness class, or a neighborhood happy hour, it doesn’t take long to feel at home.

Loneliness in retirement is real. Moving to a place with built-in community is one of the smartest things you can do.

5. You’re Never Far From Anything

People sometimes worry that moving to a smaller coastal market means giving things up. Not here.

Savannah, Georgia — a world-class city with an international airport — is 45 minutes away. Charleston, one of the most celebrated cities in America, is about 45 minutes in the other direction. Major hospitals and top-tier medical facilities are close by. And Hilton Head Airport connects you to major hubs if you want to travel.

You get the peace and beauty of the Lowcountry and access to everything you need. Best of both worlds.
